High tea at Sweet Pea

It has been a big week full of food, frivolity, family and friends. I topped off a wonderful weekend of fun and celebrations with a ladies' high tea at Sweet Pea in Petone yesterday.

High tea at Sweet Pea is an elegant affair. However, if the idea of high tea sounds too girlie for the men in your life, I hear they also offer a guy tea option, although I'll have to take my friend's word for that one, as she said it was the only way she could get her husband and son to accompany her to high tea. It sounds like a very clever strategy!

I bypassed the extensive tea menu in favour of coffee, then we were served twelve items of food on three tiers. The bottom tier had cucumber sandwiches, something resembling a toasted cheese roll, two types of pate on wafer crackers and kransky pigs in blankets. They even catered for the capsicum-intolerant, replacing the chicken club sandwich with ham and cheese for me. The middle tier featured cheese and date scones (with red plum and raspberry jams and cream) and other savouries that tasted delicious but disappeared before I could note exactly what was in each. For sweet treats, there was a passionfruit and lemon curd tart and yummy panna cotta with strawberry garnish.

Finally, we got to select a cupcake to take home from Sweet Pea's decadent cupcake cabinet. This is a jersey caramel cupcake, beautifully packed up and ready to go.

High tea at Sweet Pea is a great thing to do with a group of girls, whether you're celebrating a special occasion or just want to indulge.
