Firefox 3.0 vs del.icio.us

Since I got my Mac, I've been a new convert to Mozilla Firefox. I love it as a browser; it's clean, simple, easy to use, and supports almost everything I do. I eagerly downloaded Firefox 3 this morning, after being wowed by some of the FAQs and stats related to its release, including an attempt at a Guinness World Record for the most downloads in a 24 hour period (more than 8 million). So I joined the more than 25 million users so far in jumping from Firefox 2 to discover that it now supports even more of what I do. Except one vital thing.

My beloved del.icio.us tool bar is not compatible with Firefox 3. How can this be?? When the Top 100 Tools for Learning were released in Spring 2008, del.icio.us and Firefox were ranked numbers 1 and 2 respectively. Now they're not compatible with each other's latest versions! Come on guys, get it together and stay at the top of the list.

101 things to do in 1001 days

I came across some posts today where a number of people had set themselves 101 things to do in 1001 days. I guess the premise is simple: compile a list of goals, count 1001 days from now, and work your way through them, ticking them off along the way and sharing your progress via your blog. Kind of a Bucket List (2007), but with the expectation that there's more life after the list is finished. Day Zero is a site to get you started.

I’ve got to say that I’m tempted. I don’t know if I’m bold enough to broadcast my goals to the world at this early stage; the perfectionist in me would prefer to achieve something before announcing it. I also have little idea about what life has in store for me in the next few years, although I suppose that could put me in the ideal position to start this challenge. I wonder, though, whether my attention span could sustain goals for this long; it's been getting shorter and shorter in recent years.

I have, however, worked out that 1001 days from now would take me to 29 March 2011. (This time and date calculator is helpful.)

I'll start putting together some ideas for a list then decide whether or not to go ahead. There is a master list available for you to browse, which looks a bit overwhelming. After doing some searching, I found a group of people who have already started the list and seem to be supporting each other via their blogs:
All the best with your 101 goals, everyone! Will keep you posted if I decide to go ahead ...

Muppet Babies

A friend started sending me muppets on Facebook recently, and it got the ball rolling. Everybody could do with a muppet or three to brighten their day. :-) It's the usual trick of unlocking different muppets once you've sent so many, and you can collect the whole set. So far, I have received Baby Gonzo, Baby Kermit, and Beaker (me me me meeee). But what's with all these baby muppets? They're kind of cute and all, but not a huge part of muppet culture ... until I remembered the adorable animated series of Muppet Babies from the mid-80s.

We got to meet Scooter's twin sister, Skeeter (whatever happened to her?). Bunsen still looked like an old man. I remember Nine Take Away One Equals Panic, where poor Fozzie thought he was being cast out of the nursery, but of course Nanny wouldn't do that - she was talking about the chair he was sitting on! Did Piggy ever become "the first farmer in history to figure out a way to grow an ice cream tree"?

It's Saturday morning now, and that's when the Muppet Babies were in their glory, so here's a flashback from our weekends growing up.

Send your name to the moon

Here's something for your 'to do' list today: send your name to the moon.

"Sign up to send your name to the moon. Names will be collected and placed onboard the LRO spacecraft for its historic mission bringing NASA back to the moon. You will also receive a certificate showcasing your support of the mission.

The deadline is June 27, 2008 for the submission of names.

LRO's objectives are to find safe landing sites, locate potential resources, characterize the radiation environment, and demonstrate new technology."

So get in quick because the deadline is today! Is this for real? Not sure - will have to check for my name next time I'm on the moon. But it's kind of cool to know that my name is going there, even if I don't manage it myself.

Inspiration

I came across this site recently. Depending on your mood, you can spend a lot of time getting lost in Pravsworld. There are quotes, tips, advice, images, and inspiration for all walks of life. Very New Age-ish, here is a sample from the site. Click on the image for a bigger version you can actually read. This one is about believing in yourself:

© Pravs World & Its Photographers

Well, speaking of being in the mood, QuoteXite is another site with quotes for every occasion. Some are famous; others are lesser known. They also have a range of poems, stories, wallpapers, and online cards. Here's a sample of a story, which I quite like. Again, click on the image for a readable version. This is called The Trouble Tree:

Finally, because it seems to be one of those days, Friendhugs has a whole range of things all about, well, friendship. Quotes, cards, poems, messages, wallpapers, songs, notes ... check them out. Some are very cutesy-pie, but I suppose that's to be expected on sites like this. Browse and be inspired!

When words are too much effort

My friend sent me this book two Christmases ago:
She told me to display it prominently on my desk at work, choose a saying, and on days when words are just too much effort to deflect a stupid comment or unreasonable request, simply point and the person standing by my desk would soon get the message. She was right; we had great fun choosing a new saying each day and, although I never had to use it in exactly the way it was intended, several colleagues went out and purchased copies for themselves.

These books are a great mixture of 1950s and 60s images used in advertising, coupled with a clever quip from Ed Polish. There are fridge magnets, coffee mugs, key rings, greeting cards, and a whole range of memorabilia to go with, but for all means and purposes, I love my 'bitch book', as it came to be known. Even though I work from home now, it still comes in handy from time to time.

Here's a selection of other quips and quotes that I've found, some of which feature in this book and others from different sources. Take them how you will.

Don't go acting high and mighty ...

How readable is your blog?

Ever wondered whether anyone out there can read or comprehend what you write in your blog? Me neither, but I found this weird site which tells you what level of education is required to understand your blog. You just enter your blog's URL and it works it out.

How? No idea. Accurate? I doubt it.

blog readability test

I'll take that as a compliment. :-)

Life experiences quiz

Here's one of the many life experiences quizzes around. It's a bit clunky as there's no online form to complete and no HTML script to embed in your blog or website; instead, it's a copy-and-paste-then-delete-all-the-previous-answers job. I liked some of the questions, though. It turns out I have had 92 of the 140 experiences. Hmm, not entirely sure I plan on adding too much to the list, either - might eventually crack 100 eventually, but can't see it happening any time soon.

Desperate Housewives season finale

I love Desperate Housewives. Absolute love it. It's the only time of the week when my world stops for a television programme. The rest of the week, I don't care if the tv is off 24/7. Get the picture?

I've already waxed lyrical about my desperate addiction. Some episodes are pure magic (I'm thinking of the supermarket shootout), others are hilarious (the very first episode), some heart-wrenching (Edie and the silk scarf), and even though some border on the ridiculous (the tornado episode, which I know that everyone else loved but for me it went several steps too far), there's something about the goings-on in Wisteria Lane which always manages to keep me hooked.

Last night was the Series 4 finale in New Zealand. One of the more 'ridiculous' episodes, with murders, beatings, deep and dark secrets revealed, a gay commitment ceremony, and the perfect Bree coming up trumps. But the bit that really got me was the 'five years later' thing. What on earth is with that?? For a series which is famed for its twists and the unexpected, why spoil the next five years for us? Is this it for Wisteria Lane?? I think the verdict is out: this was a really bad way to end Series 4. Disappointing.

About My Sisters - Debra Ginsberg

I like reading biographies in the same way as I like trawling through random blogs; there's something to be said for getting a glimpse into other people's lives without actually having to know them or hang around for too long.

Now, I don't have sisters (never wanted them either, but am quite liking having a new sister-in-law). I always thought I might like more brothers (I have only one), but sisters never came into the equation. Apart from having to share a room, there was much to be lost by having another girl on the scene, so I've never really experienced this whole 'sisterly bond' thing, nor desired it. It still fascinates me, though.

I'm reading About My Sisters, by Debra Ginsberg. It's a light, easy read and her writing style is enticing. Debra's family is spanned over three subsets, with a fair sized gap between each set of siblings. However, they're all extremely close; not just in proximity, but also in lifestyle. They celebrate birthdays big time (scary) and are always supportive of each other, outwardly and in private. They've been through ups and downs but remain in tact as a family. The story unfolds.

As someone who does quite a bit of self-reflection, Debra's honesty as she introduces us to her family members, individually and as a collective unit, gives us a true glimpse into their lives. It reminds me very much of Rachel Simon's Riding the Bus With My Sister: open, honest, and tells of the frustrations along with the highlights. An enjoyable read if you're interested in finding out about other people's family dynamics.

A nightmare

Someone sent me this link several years ago, as my Internet addiction was starting to take flight. Now, thanks to Facebook, Blogger, Google, Stuff, TradeMe, and a multitude of other sites and application, it's simply a nightmare to even contemplate it. Imagine the horror if this message was true:

The End of the Internet

Congratulations! This is the last page. Thank you for visiting the End of the Internet. There are no more links.

You must now turn off your computer and go do something productive.

Go read a book, for pete's sake.

Aaarrgghhhh!!! Surely not!?!

The Muppet Show

The Muppets rock. I grew up on The Muppet Show and never quite grew out of them. This is my phone's wallpaper (on the left).

I have the 25th anniversary collection on my iPod (as well as the original Muppet Show cast album, which had some gems on it that I've yet to find elsewhere). It's also got some extra bits and pieces from the unfortunate Muppet movies, but is always guaranteed to make me smile. The resident band, Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, are outstanding musicians and provided much entertainment and drama. Here is a collection of some of my favourite Muppet Show clips, just because.

The opening theme:

Here's my txt message tone:

My favourite Swedish chef recipe for chocolate moose:

The hugga wugga song:

Mr Bassman (missing from the 25th anniversary album):

"Sax and Violence" - awesome musical improvisation with the most underrated sax solo of all time:

Closing theme - I want this at my funeral (complete with Statler and Waldorf's heckling at the end):

Some smiles to brighten your day

For all of us 80s kids out there, here is a smile to brighten your day.

Remember Saturday mornings with Gobo, Mokey, Wembly, Boober, and Red? Uncle Travelling Matt, the doozers, and "the Trash Heap has spoken. Nyeah!"? Yup, the world of Jim Henson came alive down in Fraggle Rock.

My sweetie prefers Gummi Bears instead. I don't remember them, even after watching the opening credits, but for those who do ... enjoy.

Where can I go?

I have some Air New Zealand Airpoints Dollars which are due to expire soon. I also have Qantas Frequent Flyer points stacked up, and a heap of Flybuys. And still I only travel for work! However, I'm determined to not lose my points next month, so am keeping an eye on Grabaseat each day and thinking about a short overseas jaunt in mid-October. I need to make a decision in the next few weeks and get something booked.

Air New Zealand have this cool map system where you can slide down to the number of airpoints dollars you have and it shows you where you can go with them, from your starting destination. So far, I can only make it around the country, but it's great to see so many orange lines ... most likely they'll be used to fly to Auckland before heading overseas, where I'll return from Auckland via Flybuys. *Dream time sigh*

Which superhero are you?

I don't know why, but I took this quiz today. Not someone who is into comic book or superhero characters much, I still wanted to be Wonder Woman when I was younger, and remember running along the dining room floor at great speed, almost into the ranch slider, trying to fly and be The Greatest American Hero. It's turns out that I'm neither of those characters, though.

A change is as good as a break

Apparently, a change is as good as a break. I'm not entirely convinced. However, I'm all for variety; when it comes to online stuff, I'm easily amused and have a short attention span. I used to change my computer's wallpaper daily, having downloaded a whole selection from various websites. Now I find that my Mac laptop will do it automatically every hour. All I have to do is tell it where to look!

Last week, I copied all my images from my PC onto my Mac and set it up on an hourly cycle. Images I forgot I even had are now rotating and giving me daily variety. So where did I get them all from? Two sites that are free to use and have a huge range are wallpapers.com (just make sure you include the 's' - without it, you'll get wallpaper of the original kind), and wallpapers.org (again, remember the 's'). They both do screen savers, too, as well as a range of animated wallpaper, but that just drives me nuts.

Here's a small version of a new one I've downloaded and absolutely love:

Two Souls

Last night, we went for dinner at Two Souls Bistro in Wakefield Street. The hearts and lovey dovey décor initially scared me as I walked past, but this turned into a very cosy atmosphere as the restaurant filled up.

The food was excellent and couldn't be faulted. We somehow chose a bit of a seafood theme; we started by sharing an entrée of scallops and roti bread, then each had fish (bluenose) for the main course. Mine was the fish of the day, served with crushed Parmesan cheese and sundried tomatoes, and my sweetie had blackened Cajun fish with chips.

Our dessert order somehow managed to get lost but, upon noticing us waiting, the maître d’ did not hesitate to offer us complementary coffees as compensation, which we really appreciated. When dessert did arrive (chocolate cake and chocolate truffle torte), we were not disappointed - a perfect way to end an impeccable meal with excellent service.

Two Souls offers a main for a main with the Entertainment Book gold card. Check out their great reviews here and here.

Youth in Asia

I have just been watching part of a documentary about Exit Australia's Dr Death helping elderly people commit euthanasia. It was quite alarming, and both sides present convincing sounding arguments, but that's not what I want to get into today.

Instead, I was reminded of my favourite kiwi entertainer from the 80s. Billy T James always was, and remains, absolutely hilarious. Even though some of the comedy has dated, I still love it. I have some old videos of his comedy compilations and need to upgrade to DVD sometime. Here's him reading Te News, complete with his yellow towel, yesterday's weather, and including a report on Youth in Asia. Enjoy.

carriebradshaw.com

After seeing the Sex and the City movie last night, I had to complete the post mortem process by looking up copious websites about it today. There's the official website, HBO's page, Wikipedia, IMDB, trailers, reviews, and a story about the naked neighbour, among other things.

Then there was Louise from St Louis's masterpiece: carriebradshaw.com - yes, it actually exists! (Of course it would. They wouldn't lie to us through film, would they?) Featuring pics from the movie, and excerpts from "Carrie's books" (don't read them too closely - they're the same on each page), I wondered just how many people (women) went home and did what I did, ie look up the site that Louise 'created' for Carrie.

Very sweet. *sigh*

Sex and the City

The moment of anticipation finally arrived; tonight, a whole bunch of girls unashamedly indulged in Sex and the City, the movie. It's been a while since we last checked in with Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda. A friend has the boxed sets from Series 1-5, and every month or so a group of us girls would get together for a pot luck dinner and watch a few episodes of SATC. Didn't we all live through their ups and downs like they were our own?

So, after four years, we were ready for the next installment. Yes, it was predictable. Yes, it seemed like an extra long episode, even without some of the insightful commentary that usually came about from Carrie's writing. Yes, we get it: fashion and clothes play a big part (even though some outfits were bordering on ridiculous, and I'm not talking about the ones on the catwalk either). Yes, there was lots of humour and warm fuzzy moments in it. No, it wasn't the same as the series, but did that matter? All in all it was incredibly comfortable and restored our faith in what the show was about: friendship.

During the post mortem at Espressoholic, we agreed that we missed the presence of Stanford Blatch and Anthony Marentino (who both played minor roles), that Steve Brady had aged the most, that Smith Jerrod was also looking older but still incredibly hot, that Jennifer Hudson was great in her role as Louise from St Louis, that Charlotte is still the prettiest, that Samantha just doesn't fit into LA, that our Dawn was such a wuss for crying at soooooo many soppy stages, that - that - that ... yup, it was great to spend an evening with old friends. :-)

Fidel's

Fidel’s is something of an institution in upper Cuba St in Wellington. In my youth, I spent many a late night sipping strong long blacks out the back of the café, while freezing my butt off and sitting on wobbly stools underneath a ram’s head. Old age has meant that my beverage of choice at night is now a trim hot chocolate, sipped inside in their expanded and renovated indoor area, but either way, Fidel’s has always and will hopefully always remain as it is.

I know someone who organises pudding dates with her girlfriends, and apparently Fidel’s is a firm favourite with them. I’m not entirely sure why; the coffee (Havana) is good, but their counter cakes are often hit and miss. The chocolate cake (especially the icing) was in good form the other night though, as my sweetie and I shared a piece to go with our hot chocolates. Check out their website.

La la la la la la

My sweetie keeps sending me smurfs on Facebook. I now have the whole set to light up my day. Usually I don't bother with Facebook applications like this, but these guys are really cute and made me feel young again. :-)

I thought I'd see what's on the web about The Smurfs. Their website tells me they've been around for 50 years in 2008. Wow - I only came across them in the early 80s, when they were $1 each at BP. We were also given a huge bag of them from our cousins on our way home from a visit to New York.

Wikipedia quickly burst my bubble. Here's their definition:
"The Smurfs are a fictional group of small sky blue creatures who live in Smurf Village somewhere in the woods."

Fictional? Excuse me??

Their other definition (why do they have two?) wasn't much better, so I trawled elsewhere.

There are whole websites dedicated to these little blue fellows. Bluebuddies is your one stop smurf shop, which lists and describes them (complete with images smurfed from Facebook). This gives a great introduction to who's who. For die-hard smurfers, here's a complete list, along with some trivia and clarifications about a few of them. (How does anyone know this??) I see there is also a smurf movie planned for 2009.

How normal are you?

Because this a self-indulgent blog, and because I'd rather be doing something else than working, I'm in the mood for silly online quizzes. Blogthings is my latest discovery. It allows self-indulgents to gorge on their favourite subject: themselves.

Here, you can find out how normal you are, what your ice cream preferences say about your personality, what the contents of your refrigerator say about you, whether you are sweet or salty, or how independent you are. Here are a few of my favourite results:

You Are 55% Normal

While some of your behavior is quite normal...

Other things you do are downright strange

You've got a little of your freak going on

But you mostly keep your weirdness to yourself

Your Hidden Talent

You are both very knowledgeable and creative.

You tend to be full of new ideas and potential - big potential.

Ideas like yours could change the world, if you build them.

As long as you don't stop working on your dreams, you'll get there.

Your Risk Taking Level: Medium

What's life without a few risks?

You're willing to be daring when the time is right.

You know that there's no reward in life without risk.

You just always make sure that you look before you leap.

You Are a Semi-Colon

You are elegant, understated, and subtle in your communication.

You're very smart (and you know it), but you don't often showcase your brilliance.

Instead, you carefully construct your arguments, ideas, and theories – until they are bulletproof.

You see your words as an expression of yourself, and you are careful not to waste them.

You friends see you as enlightened, logical, and shrewd.
(But what you're saying often goes right over their heads.)

You excel in: The Arts

You get along best with: The Colon
